Why The Block?

All writers get that – the writer’s block. It just happens; it is like an unexplainable disease. Don't worry, it isn't catching, not a virus. It is a moment where you can be so full of ideas and the next is poof! You just can't write. It can be so (ugh!) exasperating to have all these notions and when penned down, and did self-reading, shucks! Nothing pertinent there (ho-hum), no cohesiveness (uh…), what flimsy article (grr…)! Try with all your might to do revisions, something is missing!!! Or the article is plain (sigh, sigh, sigh) lackluster. When the block descends, writing down something new for a deadline it truly seems like the good ideas are elusive, and capturing it to make it concrete is a real, REAL hardship. It feels like your efforts in writing are waning. But, hey … talent is God-given and will always be there; and whatever lack of talent, here comes skill, for which this author believes can be develop as long as one is willing and NOT give up.

Writers from past to present will it to overcome writer’s block, especially those who are commissioned to write. There different kinds of writer’s block. It could be, the writer have so many ideas and cannot pin on the right concept. Or it could be the opposite! No single idea at all! Sometimes, a writer’s block comes because of loss of words or questionable usage of the right choice of words and/or sentences – suddenly, everything halts or become stagnant, the writer cannot write. It’s just like that, weird. Also, a writer’s block could be a result of misinformation or even lack of information. Through using his intuition, the writer knows whether his data is sufficient or deficient. Writers who are in the writing profession usually experience the block because of work pressures. To beat it, read on …

How to Get Rid of the Block

Allowing time to communicate and use all media is the best way to beat the writer’s block. It is the sum total of the easy ways. Yes, communicate with self, nature, others and of course, with Father God. What to communicate with yourself? Ask yourself simple questions:

(a) What is the purpose of my writing?

(b) What are the points to consider when I send my message(s) across my reader without any mix-ups?

(c) Do I have enough information or should I go to the library or maybe browse the net? Hhmm … it’ll be both.

When you get around to it, communing with nature is another simple step to motivate your writing. If you’re fortunate to have a garden, then for goodness sake, go out. Stroll around, inhale-exhale, breathe easy, you’ll find this simple activity very relaxing and give you a refreshing surge to write again. Of course, if it’s snowing, stay indoors, and ah, just look out the windows and see the winter birds. The cardinal is truly a sight to behold. Oh! Don’t stare too long at the snow because it’ll make your eyes hurt. Better yet, watch tv and go to the National Geographic channel, or Animal Planet; these channels give interesting insights on nature.

A lot of times, being with friends is what you need to get unstuck. True friends and close family members give the best insights. With them, you can be able to formulate new ideas or reform old ideas. Many writers are more inspired when friends and family are supportive. It is a fun experience to go out with family and/or friends to shop for writing tools like stationary, colored pens, pencils, a new book, reading light, or whatever stuff that motivates you more to write. More fun is having cook-outs or eat with good company. All writers need food, we all need to be nourished, you know.

Well, an effective and deeper way to get rid of the block is, have an occasion with God in prayer. Praying is a combination of talking with God, reflecting and meditation. It is very calming and reassuring. Tell God all your worries. Hash it out with Him what is bothering you, whether it is your writing or whatever really puts you down. Unloading all these negative feelings to God will give you a huge relief and a sweet sense of positivity. An instance of reflection does so much wonder in a mind that is cluttered and even blank.

A Generalization:

On the whole, the easy steps to beat the writer’s block are:

1. Take a walk – there’s so much benefit attached to walking

2. Stretch – gets rid of cramps

3. Relax – take on your favorite hobby & de-stressing through reflective prayers does wonders

4. Do the mind-mapping process – jotting down notes or sketching clear up muddled minds

5. Get informed – read, watch tv, listen to the radio, hear music; the media (print & broadcast) give up to date on any subject matter ranging from news to entertainment, etc.

HOPEFULLY WANTED ADVICES:

Next to talking, writing is the next best way to communicate. Thus, it is pertinent to remember the 4C’s in writing – clear, complete, concise, concrete. Have patience because it takes editing and critiquing to make your article really good. Develop your own style of writing and you can do this by observing other authors; also, make sure to give credit where it’s due. Of course, pursue writing with a passion!

I take a break from writing from time to time. I enjoy but it really can be a bit draining and I feel that I don't write as well after a while. I'm currently on a writing binge, so I'll probably have to take a break soon.
